To get from Firenze to Barcelona, we found a good deal on a flight departing from Pisa. With heavy hearts (and heavy stomachs!), we booked an overnight stay at a hotel in Pisa across the street from the train station. We stayed in Firenze until the very last minute and arrived in Pisa at 1 AM, just in time to catch about 4 hours of sleep before our flight. We asked our concierge for the best way to get to the airport, and he told us we could either get a taxi or take the train. He suggested to take a taxi because it was less than 2 km from the hotel to the airport and easier with all our luggage. Done.
The next morning, the hotel hailed a taxi for us and we got in. Less than 3 minutes later, we arrived at the airport and the driver turns to us and says "
10 Euro". Scuza?! 10 Euro? That's 14 USD for a 1.5 km ride! The drived feigned anger, jumped out of his car, and broke it down for us on the street:
- $5.14 Euro is where our meter started
- $0.50 Euro for each of our 4 pieces of luggage
- $2 Euro holiday (weekend) surcharge
... leaving less than $1 Euro for the actual fare!
