We tried to pack light for our trip because we didn't want to be weighed down. We thought about bringing a laptop but decided against it because a) we didn't want to lug it around for 3 months, and b) we didn't want to have to worry about it getting stolen. Looking back, this was a bad move.
You, our loyal 1 or 2 readers, may have noticed that there are some weeks where we post a lot and others when we don't post at all. We did not realize how inconvenient and expensive (mostly in Europe) it is to get online overseas. In SE Asia, the cost was ~50 cents an hour so it wasn't a big deal to pop into an internet cafe to blog and surf the net. In Europe, the price increased to anywhere from $2 to $14 an hour. Ouch! Along the way, we've also dealt with broken keyboards, foreign keyboards (with letters and random symbols in different places on the keyboard), non-working USB ports (for uploading pics), smoke-filled internet cafes, and no AC (which was a big deal in SE Asia). To further rub salt in our wounds, there are so many cafes and bars overseas which offer free wi-fi... only useful if you have a laptop!
Our current apartment is hooked up with a computer and free internet, so we will be posting like crazy this week in an effort to "catch up". Enjoy!
